Culinary graduates impress

Mariselle Stofberg Last week, the Silver Spoon Hospitality Academy hosted their graduation in Windhoek. “It’s days like today that you will remember for the rest of your life. You have achieved a new step in your career, and you must be proud of that. You have given what you can, and you have studied hard,” said Ulf Grünewald, the guest speaker at the graduation. The ceremony celebrated the achievements of students completing a food and beverage diploma, a culinary arts certificate and a culinary arts diploma. Portia Manyeruke was awarded as the student of the year in culinary arts for her outstanding achievements. “I received two distinctions during my exams, and I am currently working in Eros in Windhoek. This has been a long journey, but I’ve made it, and I’m extremely happy and excited for what lies ahead,” Manyeruke said. Remain focusedGrünewald congratulated the students on their achievements, but encouraged them to remain vigilant, to work hard and to continue to remain focused on this journey within their career. “You will be moving into a big and unforgiving world, and there you are climbing another step. Hard times and long hours within this industry lie ahead, but I believe that if you love what you do, you will achieve success. Stay focused on why you chose this career path to start with and always keep that passion,” he added. “Embrace fear and trust your instincts. Real success requires step after step after step after step. It requires choice after choice and demands education, passion, commitment, persistence, hunger and patience,” Grünewald added. Tom Mutavdzic, Silver Spoon Hospitality Academy director and lecturer, congratulated the students on their achievements and the hard work they put into the year, despite the many challenges. “It was a long road, and sometimes we had tears, but we also made wonderful memories. I want to thank the parents who enabled their children to attend the academy and allowed them to broaden their skills. Now, it’s up to you as students to use these skills and knowledge, and to remember to never stop learning,” chef Terry Jenkinson, a lecturer at the academy, said. Students, parents and lecturers celebrated this milestone as young chefs prepare to take the culinary and hospitality industry by storm.
