James Michael Rios SalesMy name is James Michael Rios Sales, I am 20 years old from Windhoek. I am studying culinary arts at Windhoek Hospitality Culinary College. I started at WHCC in September of 2021 and my course is about a year and a half long. What made me choose culinary school was the fact that culinary students are needed but not many people want to work in the industry; also, I find a lot of pleasure in cooking. Having a passion for cooking was one of the main driving forces behind my choosing culinary arts as the course I wanted to study and WHCC helped me by providing me with the necessary training and teaching. Studying culinary arts has truly been a great experience. Most of the time at school they give us homework that requires us to do research and that helps us with understanding what we are learning about, also because we learn more from things we put our efforts into instead of the teachers just spoon-feeding us.My process of apply to culinary school was really simple. I just needed my grade 12 certificate, my ID and something that says why you are apply to WHCC. After handing in my documents, I didn’t even wait for more than 24 hours to get a response from the college. The people at the school were also very kind and helpful. I found out about WHCC through Instagram and I was immediately convinced because firstly it’s a Swiss diploma that you get and I can eventually use that diploma anywhere in the world because it’s an international diploma.When it comes to challenges, I didn’t really face many challenges because the teachers were always there to assist. The only thing I would say is, don’t miss class. Missing one or two lessons can really have you falling behind in your work.The advice I would give to students who aspire to study culinary arts is that you have to have the passion because culinary arts is something you have to have a feeling for. There will be days that you’re stressed out and there will be days where you will feel the pressure but remember it will all be worth it if culinary arts are your dream. So, you should always follow your dreams and not let small things bother you. Just put 100 % into everything.
