Chinese start on roads project in South

China Henan International Cooperation Group will undertake an envisaged 35-month project for the rehabilitation and widening of the trunk road between Mariental and Keetmanshoop.The project is funded by development partner KfW of Germany to the tune of about N$530 million and the main contractor is the China Henan International Cooperation Group.At a groundbreaking ceremony for the commencement of the project on Monday, the minister of works and transport, John Mutorwa said the rehabilitation works will start in January 2021."The project will ensure that Namibia's road network is of the highest standard and will facilitate commercial trade, as Namibia is positioned as a gateway for imports and exports to and from land landlocked neighbours in the SADC region like Zimbabwe, Botswana and Zambia," he said.DEVELOPMENTMutorwa said the section of the trunk road that will be rehabilitated is part of Namibia's national trunk road network, which connects Windhoek and Walvis Bay, as well as neighbouring countries in the north like Angola and Zambia.According to Mutorwa, government is moving forward to make the road network safer while implementing the country's development programme as well as expand the transport infrastructure to all the parts in the country.Meanwhile, the minister said Namibia's Roads Authority (RA) will be responsible for the overall supervision and management of the project.The project is envisaged to create 300 jobs of which SMEs and subcontractors are set to benefit from skills transfers from the main contractors. – Nampa/Xinhua
