Chinese embassy supports schools

Mariselle StofbergThe Chinese embassy has donated 45 000 surgical masks, 4 000 N95 masks and 35 forehead thermometers on 29 April to help teachers and learners in the Khomas Region to fight the Covid-19 pandemic. This was donated to seven schools which include Chairman Mao Zedong High School, Highline Secondary School, People’s Primary School, Monte Christo Project Primary School, Namibia Primary School, Windhoek International School and Amitofo Care Centre. “All seven schools have built strong bonds with China and some of them are beneficiaries of the Chinese Ambassador Scholarship and Panda Pack project. The youth is the future of a country. As an all-weather friend, China always cares about the development of education in Namibia,” said Zhang Yiming, the ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Namibia. “A thriving education makes a thriving country, while a powerful education makes a powerful country. The Chinese government and the Chinese embassy in Namibia are willing to further strengthen cooperation with Namibia in the field of education to help Namibia cultivate more talents for the future,” Yiming added. “We are fortunate to be selected to receive such an amazing donation. This donation shows how much you support and assist our schools, learners, teachers and country. Our schools in the township areas really are in need of a lot of materials and through this we are able to support these children in the fight against Covid-19,” said George Louw, the principal of Chairman Mao Zedong High School. Anna Mutumbulwa, a learner of Highline High School, expressed her gratitude towards the embassy for helping their learners. “Many of our learners don’t have the funds to get masks, so this will ensure we as learners and our teachers can keep safe during these difficult times,” she said. The governor of the Khomas Region, Laura McLeod-Katjirua, emphasised the importance of this relationship between Namibia and People's Republic of China and hopes that these two countries can continue to maintain and strengthen their relationship. “I hope all the school learners can study hard, make full use of your youth time and become envoys for the building of the China-Namibia friendship,” Yiming said.
