Challenging the impossible

Evany van Wyk Client care supervisor Sonia Shifotoka has been a part of the King Price Insurance family since they first opened their doors in 2016. She joined the company because she wanted to be part of something young, dynamic and challenging, and she is still thrilled to be part of this incredible group of people. “Everything has to start somewhere, and life is indeed all about taking risks,” she says. “The founders took a chance, I took a chance, and it is paying off! We’re already a team of more than 70, with six offices across Namibia.”Shifotoka was born and raised in Windhoek, where her dream was to pursue a career in modelling or as a flight attendant. However, six years ago, while representing another company at the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) summit, her enthusiasm was spotted by the owner of an insurance company, who offered her a job. “No thought of the insurance industry had ever crossed my mind, yet I love it,” she says.With a diploma in management and taxation, Shifotoka worked at two other corporate insurance companies before joining “the king’s kingdom”, as she calls it.“We have gone as far as decreasing monthly premiums as a vehicle’s value depreciate. That was and is one of the most interesting aspects of providing services like no other,” Shifotoka says.The department that she works in is fortunate to work hand in hand with sales agents, claims commanders and retention consultants. “If a King Price client decides to make any changes to their policy, we at client care action the requests,” Shifotoka explains.Time management has been one of her biggest challenges. Quality and quantity work hand in hand. Managing the flow of communication adequately with clients by keeping them constantly up to date while new requests come in can be challenging. “I would say coming from the position of a sales agent to my current position has really encouraged me to strive harder and give my best in this field,” she says. Changing jobs or positions is never easy as the fear of failure plays a big role in this regard. “There is always this anticipation that you might not excel.” Shifotoka believes that failure is part of success and that nobody was born knowing.“Learn today even if you might struggle, because tomorrow you will have better ways of fulfilling it,” she advises.Shifotoka says word cannot express how much love, fun and appreciation goes into the work that the King Price family does. “We don’t just work hard; we also play hard,” she says.She has clearly been working hard and still continues to do so as she wants to follow in the footsteps of her boss. “To serve on this institution’s managerial board and hopefully own a portion of the company via shares, while investing in the better tomorrow of Namibia, is what I’m working towards.”
