Cement factory secures power
OHORONGO Cement signed a power deal with Nampower to the extent of N$41 million to supply the future cement factory with power. This deal will support Ohorongo’s supply demand and expected completion is December 2010.
Ohorongo Cement (Pty) Limited, with its majority shareholder Schwenk, recently announced their N$2.5 billion investment in a cement factory on the farm Sargberg between Tsumeb and Otavi.
They have received their mining license from the Ministry of Mines and Energy earlier this year. Following this important milestone, Ohorongo Cement has signed the turn-key contract for the erection of the cement plant with Polysius AG.
The infrastructural works such as access roads and preparation of the building site has already started with Namibian construction companies. The implementation of the machinery and equipment of the cement factory by Polysius will start early 2009. Ohorongo cement has chosen a turn-key project with brand new equipment and machinery.
The plant is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2010, producing 700,000 tons of cement per year. Power is one of the most critical supplies for a project like this, said Uwe Mueller, General Manager: Technique at Ohorongo Cement. About 130kW is required to produce one ton of cement.
The cement plant will have a lighthouse function for the Otavi region. Paulinus Shilamba, Managing Director at Nampower, added that this project is important for the country and a milestone. He added that he wished this project happened earlier, as it could have assisted to counteract the current cement shortage and the ever increasing cement prices.
This project will boost the economic growth of the region and Namibia in general, specifically in preparation for the Soccer World Cup in 2010, Shilamba pointed out. He reiterated Nampower’s commitment to this project and that the power will definitely be available in 2010. Nampower will fast track the process to make sure they meet the necessary deadlines, he indicated.
