CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF GROOTBERG
The first communal conservancy in Namibia to own a tourist lodge, the #Khaodi//Hoas conservancy in the Kunene Region, recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of Grootberg Lodge.
The lodge was officially opened in 2005 and is managed for the conservancy under a joint venture agreement by a private tourism operator, Journeys Namibia.
Since the opening of Grootberg Lodge it has gone from strength to strength and is now recognized as a landmark in the tourism industry for being the first the first middle-market establishment in the country that is 100% owned by a conservancy.
Perched on the edge of the Etendeka Plateau, Grootberg offers spectacular views and a range of activities – from rhino-tracking to walks and interactions with local communities.
The #Khaodi//Hoas communal conservancy was one of the first four conservancies to be proclaimed by the government in 1998 and set aside 12 000 hectares for conservation and tourism.
Today, the ?Khoadi //Hoas Conservancy stands proudly as an international case study of how conservation efforts can be successful and sustainable in the long run. By visiting this breathtaking part of the world and enjoying all it has to offer, visitors are contributing to the long-term sustainability of the area, its animals and the people.
The friendly staff members at the lodge are all employed from the community and have been trained to perform their various duties.
For travellers undertaking a journey between the Etosha National Park and Swakopmund, the lodge provides the ideal midway stopover, whilst allowing guests to experience the true wilderness of the region.
The Hoada Campsite nearby Grootberg Lodge, which is also owned by the conservancy, has recently been upgraded with the help of conservancy members.
Each campsite boasts its own kitchen facilities with running water and braai facilities and there is abundant space for setting up camp. As part of the mission of the conservancy, careful thought and emphasis have been placed on minimizing the impact on the environment.
Ablution facilities with flush toilets are cleverly concealed amongst the rocks and the braai area doubles as a “donkey” – warming water for showers while the braai fires are burning.
