Bloedbad
Maandag moet vir alle Namibiërs – nie net die wat die nuus volg nie – ‘n hernude wakker skud wees oor hoe ons land oënskynlik nie ‘n groeiende golf van ernstige geweldsmisdaad en ander onnatuurlike sterftes onder beheer kan bring nie.
‘n Dubbele moord op Arandis waartydens twee mans wat diep spore in tegniese opleiding getrap het koelbloedig afgemaai is, het skokgolwe deur die hele land gestuur.
Met die skrywe hiervan was daar nog geen aanduiding oor die motief vir die laakbare daad nie. Die polisie moet so gou moontlik die raaiselagtige tragedie oplos.
Namibië moet nie net ween oor die heengaan van mnre. Eckhard Mueller en Heimo Hellwig nie, maar ook oor me. Merentha Geingos, ‘n laerskoolonderwyseres wat wreed deur haar man, ook ‘n laerskoolonderwys, vermoor is.
En oor drie skoolmeisies wat op Aranos verkrag is.
Die babaseuntjie wat met ‘n baksteen in ‘n kanaal naby Oshiputusheendjamba gegooi is.
Die vier maande oue baba wat op Keetmanshoop byna deur ‘n oudpolisieman vermoor is.
Selfs oor hoekom mnr. Reinhold Namupala, ‘n senior bestuurder by staatshuis, sy eie lewe geneem het – al weet ons nog nie presies wat sy redes was nie.
En oor al die naamlose slagoffers waarvan ons nie eens weet nie.
Misdaad is nie ‘n kwessie van kleur of ras nie – tensy dit later in ‘n verhoor bewys word. Om deur brille na misdaad te kyk, verwring werklikhede.
Mense se lewens en hul veiligheid kan nie só min werd wees in ons land nie.

The devastation at Notre Dame is a tragedy for the whole world
Throughout the world Monday, millions watched in uncomprehending horror as one of the world’s most magnificent structures was engulfed in flames.
Paris’ iconic Cathedral of Notre Dame, built over the course of more than a century, beginning in 1163, has been justly celebrated for its awesome beauty: its towering spire, stained-glass windows and rainspout gargoyles, much of which now lies in ruins.
TV and cable stations interrupted their regular programming to broadcast hours-long nonstop coverage of the carnage.
In a cruel irony of timing, the disaster took place just days before two of the most important observances on the Christian calendar: Good Friday and Easter.
The only saving grace: No one appeared to have been injured inside the church, which was quickly evacuated.
But the cathedral, which survived desecration and looting during the French Revolution, has been seriously damaged. Though the structure will survive, it likely will be impossible to rebuild exactly as it was.
To Parisians, it was the great enduring symbol of their city’s history.
But Notre Dame belongs to the entire world — and now one of its greatest treasures has suffered unthinkable damage.
