Bidding farewell

The air was tingling with anticipation on 22 October. That day finally came, the day all seniors wait for. The season finale of the high school series. It felt like that finale season, the last episodes where the credits are rolling.
A huge wave of nostalgia hung in the air. Outgoing members of the Learners Representative Council perform their final duties, parting with their jobs. Graduation, the day high school closes, and the real world opens.
With their heads held high, the graduating classes of 2020 marched into the hall. Draped in black gowns topped with a graduate hat, symbolising the efforts of the learners throughout high school. With and opening performance by the Grade 2s that reminded everyone of the good old days, headmaster Hockey gave a very encouraging speech, based on David and Goliath. He emphasised that we learners are David and we should take our best shots at the “Goliath of life” and overcome obstacles that block our paths.
Ivan van Wyk was the honourable guest speaker, a learner who completed high school at KPS in 2006. He gave a lot of advice on moving on from mistakes and that learners should not let those burdens delay their success.
“What makes a man?” Ivan asked. “Strength,” replied a learner. “No, strength doesn’t make a man. Respect does.”
Another guest speaker, Carlo Blom, currently busy with his Master’s degree, advised the grade 11s and 12s not to allow distractions to influence their studies and never to give up on life. As a former learner at KPS, he expressed his gratitude towards the school, teachers and staff.
Deputy head boy, Kevin Aukhumeb, delivered an impressive speech to the classes of 2020. The moral of his speech was not to leave a challenge incomplete for one will never be able to run away from it. He motivated his classmates to focus on making themselves proud.
Academic awards were handed out to leaners who obtained 70% and above in Ordinary Level. In addition, learners who obtained 75% and above in Higher Level were awarded. Other awards also handed out were best in subject and best in grade.
Grade 11: Giovanni Haraseb (3rd place), Dellya Ngo Bakalag (2nd place) and Ujandja Uanguta (1st place).
Grade 12:
Uetuesavi (3rd place), Joel Concencao (2nd place) and George Gawaseb (1st place).
The event was concluded with the singing of the National Anthem and school song, “Karibib Private School… Be Worthy of Thy Name”.
