PHILLEPUS UUSIKU The total alcoholic beverages produced in June 2021 was 166 308 hectolitres compared to 154 406 hectolitres produced in May 2021, while the total non-alcoholic beverages produced in June 2021 was 65 994 hectolitres compared to 40 007 hectolitres produced in May 2021.The increase in volume production recorded on a monthly basis in non-alcoholic beverages in June 2021 was due to no maintenance work undertaken as was the case in May 2021, according to the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA).The composite index for beverages consisting of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 19.5% month-on-month, compared to a reduction of 24.5% recorded in May 2021. The index recorded a decline of 1.9% year-on-year. The total beverage production for June 2021 increased to 232 302 hectolitres, from 194 413 hectolitres produced in May 2021, while a total of 236 707 hectolitres were produced in the corresponding month of 2020, NSA pointed out. AlcoholicThe alcoholic beverage index registered a monthly increase of 7.7% in June 2021 compared to a reduction of 12.5% recorded for the preceding month. An increase of 55.5% was recorded year-on-year. The non-alcoholic beverage index monthly production increased by 65.0% in June 2021 from a reduction of 50.7% registered in May 2021. On an annual basis, the index went down by 49.1%, NSA said.According to Simonis (SS), in the first quarter of 2021, the manufacturing sector experienced a severe contraction by 22.3% resulting in value addition hitting the lowest level on a quarterly basis since probably 15 years, N$3 billion in real terms.More specifically, beverage production contracted by about 28.4%, SS said.“We expect the manufacturing sector that was negatively affected by the lockdown during the second quarter of 2020 to show positive growth in the second quarter 2021 mainly due to the base effect,” SS said.
