Bank Windhoek aims to beat blood donation record

Estelle de Bruyn
Bank Windhoek staff have so far this year donated 262 times to assist the Namibia Blood Transfusion Services (NamBTS) in its national blood drive to raise critically low levels of blood reserves.

During three blood donation clinics held in March, May and October at both the bank’s main branch in Windhoek and at its Vehicle and Asset Finance department, a further 45 new blood donors were recruited.

“In total, the 262 blood donations could potentially save 786 lives,” said Marjolize Scholtz, Corporate Wellness Consultant at Bank Windhoek.

“I want to thank each and every one for donating. With 262 donations so far, we are setting our sights on beating 2015’s record of 286 donations. With the high number of vehicle accidents recorded during the long weekends and festive periods, NamBTS will need a constant blood supply to meet the demand during this period.

“To donate blood is such a selfless act and it is one of the easiest ways to save a life. Our donors have one thing in common; they want to help others in any way possible. I am proud to say that the employees of Bank Windhoek are embracing these opportunities and showing the community how much they care,” Scholtz said.

According to NamBTS blood is vital to life and for many people blood donors are their lifeline. Currently only 0.8% of our population donates blood but statistics show that 1 in 3 people will need blood in their lifetime. There is also no known substitute for blood and it cannot be replicated due to its complexity. Although lost blood volume can be temporarily replaced by synthetic solutions in trauma situations, these do not contain the necessary constituents to sustain the patient. Donor blood can (and often does) mean the difference between life and death.

“We therefore encourage our staff, customers and the general public to be on the lookout for NamBTS mobile donation clinics in their towns.

“The next round of donation clinics for our Windhoek staff is 7 – 8 December 2016 at our main branch and at our Welwitschia office in Independence Avenue,” Scholtz concluded.
