Bank of Namibia donates to Save the Rhino Trust
On Monday, 2 November 2020, BoN made a commitment to the fight to conserve the black rhino to support one of Namibia’s most valuable resources.

The deputy governor of the Bank of Namibia, Ebson Uanguta, said the bank supports and recognises the integral role and concerted efforts made by various stakeholders.
“To raise funds for this purpose, the bank engaged the international currency market in a highly subscribed auction where collectors who specialise in the collection of international currencies made bids to purchase what they consider to be a valuable collector's item. The auction of commemorative N$30 notes generated funds totalling N$480 000, which we are donating towards anti-poaching activities countrywide,” Uanguta said.
The chief executive officer of Save the Rhino Trust Namibia, Simson Uri-Khob, thanked the BoN for the honour to be linked to the new N$30 commemorative note and the N$480 000 donation to the Save the Rhino Trust Namibia.
“I am extremely grateful for this donation as it will indeed help my staff and the rhinos. The black rhino is a national treasure, and we have a huge responsibility to save them from extinction.
“Black rhinos are critically endangered, and it is estimated that there are fewer than 5 630 black rhinos left in the wild. This represents around 50% of the black rhinos being hosted by the Namibian landscape through conservation programmes of Community-based Natural Resource Management within our communal conservancies,” Uri-Khob said.
He further thanked the NamPol Protected Resource Division, the Namibian Police and Defence Force, local conservancies, traditional authorities and other NGOs, as well as their local donors Cymot, Namdeb/Debmarine, B2gold, RMB and now BoN and many other Namibian companies and individuals that continue to support the programme to keep the rhinos safe for generations to come.
“I promise that the funds will be used for the proposed activities as indicated in the contract that we just signed with BON,” Uri-Khob said.
