Bank of Namibia awards bursaries

Five of the Namibian students who recently passed their grade 12 examinations with flying colours have become the latest beneficiaries of the Bank of Namibia Bursary Scheme. The beneficiaries plan to pursue studies in chartered accountancy, information technology (IT), banking and finance, as well as education majoring in science subjects. The award ceremony took place at the bank on 23 January.The bank’s bursaries are awarded based on merit after an extensive search coupled with interviews with shortlisted candidates. Altogether 364 students from across the country applied, from whom the bank selected five successful applicants.· Helena Enkali from St Boniface College will pursue a degree in chartered accountancy at the Namibia University of Science and Technology.· Uanjandisa Rukoro from Rukonga Vision School has been accepted to study for a degree in information technology at the University of Namibia.· Petrina Shindimba from Rukonga Vision School will pursue her studies in education, majoring in science subjects, at the University of Namibia.· Uahengisa Katjizuko from Otjiwarongo Secondary School is to pursue a degree in information technology at the Namibia University of Science and Technology.· Sylviano Afrikaner from Westside High School will study towards a B.Comm degree in finance at the University of Cape Town.At the handover ceremony, BoN governor Iipumbu Shiimi encouraged the students to discover their purpose in life as they embark on their tertiary education journey, because that is “the secret to a meaningful life”.Shiimi shared nuggets of wisdom from his days as a student, advising the beneficiaries to stay true to their purpose, finding the required balance between academic life and free time on campus while steering away from temptations of campus life that their newfound freedom brings. Shiimi thanked their parents for their commitment and steadfastness, which ensured the success of their children.Over the years, the Bank of Namibia has awarded more than 100 bursaries to Namibian students who would otherwise not have been able to pursue further studies. Many former bursary holders have completed their studies and are now making the bank proud as they continue to make significant contributions in their professional lives. As of 31 December 2019, 31 undergraduates were still studying on the Bank of Namibia Bursary Scheme.The bursary scheme covers registration, tuition and accommodation fees, books, living costs for the duration of studies and a return flight ticket for those studying abroad.The Bank of Namibia remains committed to playing its role in building the appropriate human capacity to drive Namibia’s economy and developmental aspirations.
