An action-packed tennis league final took place at the Central Tennis Club (CTC) in Olympia, Windhoek, over the weekend.
There were three sections: the men’s league, which featured the top players in Namibia; the men's second league and the women’s first league. The teams that were on the court were DTS, SKW, Nampol and CTC.
The league coordinator of the Namibia Tennis Association (NTA), Lena Brinkmann, said the most exciting league is the first league final, which features the top players in Namibia who play four singles matches and two doubles matches.
The women’s league final was won by SKW, who defeated CTC in all five matches in straight sets.
Amanda van Dyk, who is part of the women’s team, said it was a great match and the CTC women were just too good. She added that continuity is the key to their success and practising doubles regularly to improve their doubles skills was a big motivation to keep the trophy once again.
“Our team was a good combination of junior and senior players. Excellent team spirit and motivation of the SKW team were the main reasons for such a successful league. Thanks to Lena Brinkmann for excellent arrangements and input. The women’s league is once again a yearly highlight on our calendar,” Van Dyk said.
The men’s second league final was decided in two singles matches. First Elias Shikongo of DTS beat Eno Akpabio of CTC in three sets, 7-5, 2-6 and 6-4.
At the same time, a long match between Rubel Nel of DTS and Patrick Paulus of CTC ended 4-6, 6-3 and 6-1.
DTS also won the doubles and defended their trophy for the second league.
