Another ATM fraud warning
AS ATM fraud is on the increase, especially during the upcoming long weekends, Bank Windhoek once again reminds the public to be vigilant when using ATMs and under no circumstances accept help from strangers. According to Ina Muir, Forensic Auditor at Bank Windhoek, ATM fraud takes place when clients make use of an ATM and criminals use this opportunity to obtain the client?s card and the personal identification number (PIN). ?Protect yourself by standing very close to the ATM and to ensure that people standing in the row behind you, maintain an acceptable distance.
When entering the PIN, keep the dial covered, so that nobody and no camera can see your PIN. Don?t accept help from strangers, even if your card is stuck or if you are not familiar with the machine. ?Should you feel that the machine does not work properly, press the ?Cancel? button and proceed to another ATM. Don?t give your PIN to anybody, not even a bank official, and don?t write the number down or carry it with you. Handle your card as you would handle cash and check your bank statements regularly for any suspicious transactions,? she said. Helpdesk numbers are placed at all Bank Windhoek ATMs.
Clients are requested to dial this number and report if the card got stuck or lost, or if somebody is harassing you or when you note any other suspicious activity or devices. During office hours clients should visit their branch to report any suspicious activity.
