Angola extends Port of Luanda tender
The management tender award has been delayed due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
This past Friday, Xinhua reported that Angola has extended to June 30 the deadline for the submission of bids for the concession and operation of the multipurpose terminal at the Port of Luanda. It quoted the concession evaluation commission’s pronouncement from the same day.
The extension of the deadline results from the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, the commission said. Launched on December 16, 2019, the international tender had previously set March 30 this year as the deadline for the opening of the bids.
The terminal has an annual handling capacity of about 2.6 million tonnes per year. The company that wins the international tender will manage the terminal for 20-25 years. The main aim of the tender is to promote development and improve the efficiency of port activities through the participation of seasoned private firms in the sector.
Local and international companies with experience in port management are invited to take part in the international tender, the commission said.
Reports from Macauhub, an authority on China relations with Portuguese-speaking countries like Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé, Príncipe and Timor-Leste and also Portugal, say numerous bids were recieved by the start of the year. The international public tender to grant the management of the multipurpose terminal at the port of Luanda attracted proposals from some of the largest companies in the sector in Angola, China, Dubai, the United States, France, Switzerland and Colombia, state company Porto de Luanda announced early this year.
The public tender is targeted at domestic and foreign companies or associations that have proven experience in the port sector or that meet the requirements stipulated in the programme, the specifications and the legislation in force.
The companies interested in participating in the tender will be required to prove they have paid-up capital of no less than US$25 million and an average annual turnover in the last three years of no less than the equivalent of US$100 million.
The multipurpose terminal of the Port of Luanda is a port facility for both general cargo and containers, and has a 610-metre quay, a depth of 12.5 metres and an area of 181 000 square metres, with capacity to handle 2.6 million tonnes of cargo per year.
