Angola a key export market for electricity

PHILLEPUS UUSIKUDuring the month September 2021, a total of 293 074 MWh of electricity was sold in the domestic economy compared to 296 030 MWh sold in August 2021. Additionally, electricity exported stood at 9 668 MWh in September 2021, compared to 8 979 MWh in August 2021, according to the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) electricity sectoral report.Angola accounted for 58.2% of electricity exported followed by Botswana (36.1%) and South Africa (5.6%).South Africa supplied most of the electricity imported into Namibia accounting for 47.5%, followed by Zambia (25%) ZPC- Zimbabwe (12.6%) and Day ahead Market SAPP (11.9%), NSA pointed out.On the production front, Namibia produced 50 664 MWh of electricity, up by 17.4% when compared to 43 152 MWh produced in August 2021.Given these developments, the electricity sources composite index that is composed of own generation and imported electricity recorded a marginal decline on a monthly basis by 0.9% in September 2021, whereas in August 2021 it registered a reduction of 0.2%. On yearly basis, the index recorded a reduction of 7.4%.The reduction on a monthly basis in the index is due to import of electricity that declined by 3.5% while own generation on the other hand recoded an increase during the period under review.RuacanaOwn generation of electricity went up by 17.4% on monthly basis while a decline of 67.3% was recorded on yearly basis. The reduction over the year was mainly due to the reduced generation from the Ruacana Power Station that went down by 83.9%, NSA said.The electricity sales composite index for September 2021 posted a monthly marginal reduction of 0.7% compared to a decline of 0.5% recorded in August 2021. However, the index recorded a growth of 1.9% year on year.The monthly contraction in the index emanates from the domestic sales that reduced during September 2021. Export sale of electricity however, increased during the review period, NSA added.The domestic sales index recorded a decline of 1.0% month-on-month while registering a growth of 2.0 percent on an annual basis. The monthly rise in domestic sales mainly emanates from sales to redistributors-LPU and the mines.The export sales index posted a monthly increase of 7.7% in September 2021 compared to a flat growth registered in August 2021. On an annual basis, the index went down by 2.3%, NSA said.
