Alweendo lauds e-governance
Namibia needs to promote inclusion by ensuring that the poorest and the most vulnerable in society have equal access and opportunity in development outcomes.
E-governance can be an effective tool for economic growth and social welfare, Minister of Economic Planning and Director General of the National Planning Commission Tom Alweendo has said.
Alweendo made the remarks recently during a panel discussion on how an e-government can help achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs), on the sidelines of the 72nd United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The session looked at ways of encouraging the integration of innovative approaches and digital technologies in the implementation of inclusive development outcomes.
A media statement issued by Alweendo's office quotes the minister as having said e-governance can reduce corruption, alleviate poverty and strengthen democracy.
For e-governance to be truly realised, the country needs to promote inclusion by ensuring that the poorest and the most vulnerable in society have equal access and opportunity in development outcomes.
In addition to the panel discussion, the minister also held a meeting with the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs' Division for Social Policy and Development (UNDESA/DSPD).
The meeting discussed Namibia’s current efforts at addressing issues pertaining to marginalised communities, as well as the country's commitment to ensuring progressive policy approaches around such communities.
The meeting touched on other areas of possible cooperation, including initiatives and programmes aimed for youth, the elderly and people living with disabilities.
Alweendo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to service delivery and ensuring that all communities receive good quality education and skills development.
Alweendo accompanied Pres. Hage Geingob to New York as part of the official delegation to the 72nd Regular Session of the United Nations General Assembly and other high-level events on the sidelines.
The theme of the General Assembly was “Focusing on people: striving for peace and a decent life for all on a sustainable planet”. - Nampa
