Andreas ShivuteActuaries are experts in evaluating the likelihood of future events using numbers, not crystal balls. They design creative ways to reduce the likelihood of undesirable events, decreasing the impact undesirable events that do occur. Actuarial science is the discipline that applies mathematical and statistical methods to assess risk in industries and professions. Andreas Shivute is an actuarial scientist and he is responsible for analysing statistical data, for example of accident rates, computer modelling of statistics to determine potential risks, preparing presentations and reports communicating findings to clients, managers and stakeholders and keeping abreast of financial developments in the business world.Shivute said he was inspired to become an actuarial scientist because it is a challenging and financial rewarding career and he was looking for something like that.Shivute studied mathematics, physical science at the University of Namibia after completing his studies he went to work for Alexander Forbes in the actuarial division. He moved over to Sanlam in passive to exploring other fields of actuarial science.The character traits one needs to become an actuarial scientist is being strong in mathematics and you need to have a lot perseverance and dedication towards the career. Shivute says one of the best highlights throughout his career journey is completing his diploma actuarial science and landing a job at one the biggest insurance companies in Namibia, MMI Holdings Limited.
