A mirror of life in Cyprus

Victor Beukes I remember my first year at Frederick University like it was yesterday. I was left breathless by the campus architecture and proximity to the mountain, and to some extent, my newfound proximity to whiteness. I have always wanted be in the construction industry as a quantity surveyor, where I could utilise my talent of crunching numbers, or as an architect, where I can explore my passion for creating. This led to me to pursue a BSc degree in quantity surveying at Frederick University in Cyprus. I enrolled at the university in 2016.It only offered architecture in Greek, so I opted for quantity surveying, which it does have in English, so no language test was necessary. In 2014, I applied for a government scholarship at the works and transport ministry, so the only challenge prior to being accepted was just playing the waiting game, as the government searched for a university, given that I qualified for the scholarship. Some of the things I like about my university is the fact that there are so many foreign students, allowing us to create bonds on an international scale. With it being a small university, I also like the fact that the lecturers are hands-on and go the extra mile with us. I also enjoy that the university organises field trips to sites for better a understanding of what we'll be doing once we are done studying, as well as leisure activities for socialising. My advice to young people out there who would like to study outside Namibia is that one should not hold back and just go for it. You not only gain academic knowledge, but you also learn about different cultures, when you come into contact with people from others countries. You also build bridges for yourself internationally. I wouldn't do anything different, as I have learnt a lot and it’s an eye-opening to experience. It is a world beyond what I am used to. After graduation, I definitely want to look into getting a degree in architecture. I love that the capital city of Nicosia, where we stay, is only about 40 minutes away from all the coastal towns. My favourite spot in town is a place called Finsba'r, where you can watch a match and enjoy a meat platter and a cold one, and just blow off some steam. Did you know? Frederick University was first established in 1965 as the Nicosia Technical and Economics School and has since 1975 offered higher education programmes as the Frederick Institute of Technology (FIT). Facts about Victor He loves watching sport. He is very dexterous and loves creating stuff and fixing almost anything. He is an odd person, but awesome once you get to know him. He is a confident chap. He is family-orientated. He is good at video games.
