PHILLEPUS UUSIKUFor the month November 2021, a slight decline in the number of livestock marketed can be observed both on a monthly and yearly basis. According to the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) livestock sectoral report, 55 289 animals were marketed in November 2021, a decline of 0.65% when compared to 54 932 animals marketed in October 2021. In addition, 57 658 livestock were marketed during the corresponding month of 2020.The agency further noted that the index for cattle export approved abattoirs and butchers in November 2021 declined on a monthly basis by 26.6% compared to a decline of 5.0% registered in October 2021. On an annual basis, the index also declined by 34.1%.The reduction in cattle export approved abattoirs and butchers index on a monthly basis is attributed to the unavailability of animals in the market as farmers continue to restock.The number of cattle slaughtered at export approved abattoirs as well as local butchers stood at 5 134 in November 2021, compared to 6 995 recorded in the preceding month, while 7 793 cattle were recorded during the corresponding month a year earlier, NSA said.LIVE CATTLEMoreover, the index for live cattle exported on hoof on a monthly basis recorded a growth of 2.8% in November 2021, compared to a decline of 14.9% recorded in the preceding month. Whereas an increase of 14.2% was registered on an annual basis.The number of live cattle exported on hoof in November 2021 was 13 092 compared to 12 730 recorded a month earlier while 11 466 live cattle were exported on hoof in October 2020.The live cattle exported on hoof were mostly exported to South Africa (13 027 cattle), followed by Angola (51 cattle) and Botswana (14 cattle), the agency pointed out.The index for small stock export approved abattoirs and butchers in November 2021 remained flat from a reduction of 51% recorded in October 2021. The index further recorded a decline of 56% year-on-year.The reduction in small stock export abattoirs and butchers on a monthly basis is attributed to the unavailability of animals in the market as farmers are continuing to restock, NSA added.The number of small stock export abattoirs and butchers increased to 4 306 in November 2021, from 4 304 recorded in October 2021, while 9 783 animals were registered during the same month of 2020.SMALL STOCKFurthermore, the index for live small stock exported registered a monthly increase of 6.1% in November 2021 compared to a growth of 31% registered in the preceding month, while an increase of 16.1% was recorded year-on-year.The number of live small stock exported stood at 29 023 animals in November 2021 compared to 27 351 exported in October 2021, while 25 003 animals were exported in November 2020.During the period under review, live sheep were exported to South Africa (17 770) and Botswana (147), while live goats were exported to South Africa (10 705), Botswana (130) and Zimbabwe (65), NSA said.Meanwhile, the index for pigs on a monthly basis registered an increase of 5.1% in November 2021 compared to a decline of 6.5% recorded in the preceding month. The index further recorded an increase of 3.3% year-on-year.The number of pigs slaughtered locally amounted to 3 734 in November 2021 compared to 3 552 pigs slaughtered during the preceding month. A year earlier, the number of pigs slaughtered locally during the corresponding month stood at 3 613, NSA said.Given these developments, the livestock marketed composite index on a monthly basis declined by 11.2% in November 2021 compared to a decline of 8.0% registered in October 2021.
