40 years of dedication

Monique AdamsJeremih Tomas’s discipline has been the cornerstone of his career. Tomas has been an employee at Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) – a subsidiary of the Ohlthaver & List group - for 40 years. The work done by Tomas has made a profound impact on the organisation and he continues to dedicate himself to excellence. Tomas is one of the few O&L employees who have been working at the company for 40 years and has never received any demerits for misconduct.Tomas was born at Oshamba village in the northern part of the country and attended Oshilulu Primary School. One his fondest memories is looking after cattle and taking care of his parents. “I used to help out with the chores around the house and respect was an important characteristic that I grew up with,” he says. Tomas’s first job was at Hansa Breweries in Swakopmund in 1980, where he worked as a machine operator. When the Hansa brewery closed, he moved to Windhoek in 2005. From the start he saw the true potential in the NBL group. “It’s the best company to work for and it has really shaped me into the person that I am today. The company takes really good care for its employees in terms of salary and benefits, and that is why I have stayed around for so long. Not only has the company helped me to grow professionally, but offers young people great career development opportunities.”One of Tomas’s biggest achievements is that he built his own house and put his children through school with the salary he received from NBL. He appreciates the NBL group because they are like his second family. “They are very kind and look out for one another.” When he looks back to where he started his career off-loading crates by, he is amazed by how much easier the work has become with the help of innovative machines.Tomas is responsible for ensuring that the palettes come from the correct lines and that he sticks a label on each palette. One of his most important responsibilities is to check the expiry dates of products and he also makes sure that products are sealed with plastic. Seeing the end product of his work on shop shelves makes him enjoy his work even more.Every day in life we are all faced with different challenges but Tomas believes that any challenge can be overcome. “Miscommunication between colleagues happens on a daily basis but we manage to overcome this with the help of our supervisors. We dedicate time every morning during our meeting to discuss all issues before we go out to the plant. As a team we have strong and good values and we face all challenges together as a team.”Tomas strives to become the best version of himself through hard work and dedication. “I want to be the best version of myself, plough back and empower those around me.”“I would like to take my hat off to NBL and O&L and I want to tell the young ones that they should take their work seriously. With the tight economic circumstances and the effects of Covid-19, we don’t really know what comes next. Appreciate what the company is doing for you and focus on your education because education is very important,” Tomas says.
