2021 World Water Day prize giving
World Water Day was commemorated in the capital city under the theme ‘The Value of Water to the Windhoek Community’.

With the 72nd annual celebration of World Water Day, at least 60 learners from Windhoek schools received trophies, certificates, goodie bags and water bottles on 16 Aprilfor their participation in the City of Windhoek’s World Water Day competition.
As part of the awareness campaign, learners from grade 4 to 12 were requested to participate in a competition by drawing or writing an essay on how valuable water is to them.
Over 360 learners from 33 schools took part in the competition, with 65 receiving prizes from the City of Windhoek for submitting the best drawings and essays.
The Municipal Council of Windhoek is highly committed to preserving the city’s scarce water resources and continues to innovate in the water industry in the water industry.
Efforts by the council to provide water were tested during hepatitis-E outbreak and more so during the Covid-19 pandemic to ensure access to water to maintain hygiene standards.
“I am impressed by the overwhelming interest demonstrated by the learners in a topic that affects every aspect of residents’ lives. I am especially excited to use the information from the essays and drawings for future awareness campaigns and activities. This is a very commendable effort and show of collective responsibility from our youth and future leaders,” said deputy mayor Clemencia Hanases.
“The young ones are the future leaders of tomorrow and it is vital to educate and inform them at a young age about the importance of saving water. I am very happy to be part of such an impactful campaign; this makes excited for the future,” said the junior mayor, Grace Mackinza.
