//Kharas FM needs money, asks for help
KEETMANSHOOP – The station manager of //Kharas Radio 102.3 FM, Menesia Keister, has extended a plea to the inhabitants of the region for financial assistance as the station wants to expand its frequency.
The radio is a non-profit entity that first went on air in 2008. Its slogan is “The pulse of the South”.
In an interview with Nampa, Keister said the radio wants to expand its frequency to Lüderitz but due to financial constraints, they are not able to buy a receiver and exporter needed for them to air at the coastal town.
The community radio station currently broadcasts within a 50-80 kilometre radius around Keetmanshoop and is located at the !Homs Ai community tourism centre in the Tseiblaagte residential area.
“We need to buy those two units to connect to the transmitter. We have the transmitter for Lüderitz but without the receiver and an exporter we cannot air; we need N$30 000 for that,” Keister said.
She urged the inhabitants of the region especially business people, private investors, non-governmental organisations, the regional council and individuals to come on board and help them raise the needed funds.
The community radio station manager added that these business owners can use the station to their own benefit for exposure and advertising purposes.
“I believe that this radio station can be used to benefit our grassroots people to inform them and keep them updated on what is happening within the region; things like council meetings, announcements and other issues can be aired,” she said.
Keister said they currently have frequency licences for Karasburg and Lüderitz, but cannot use those frequencies because of lack of funds to buy the transmitters and all relevant equipment for airing purposes there.
She further said the radio and the //Kharas governor’s office have contributed towards the buying of the transmitter for Lüderitz, but that another transmitter is needed for Karasburg.
“The Office of the Governor has assisted with N$40 000 towards buying the transmitter and the radio station itself contributed an amount of N$25 000 for buying other needed equipment as well,” said Keister. - Nampa
