ANDREW POOLMAN – Ceiling Centre WHS Old Boys took the lead on weekend 2 of Cricket Namibia’s 50-overs premier league, thanks to their seven-wicket win over CCD Tigers at Windhoek High School’s Vegkop Stadium on Saturday.

The match was reduced to 30 overs per side following a late start due to heavy rain overnight.

The visiting Tigers accumulated 92 runs all out, mostly built around wicketkeeper Wayne Raw’s 21 runs off 36 balls, as well as Thomas Sithole’s run-a-ball 19.

Right-arm spin bowler and former national U19 captain Divan la Cock had the best bowling figures for the home side, taking four wickets for eight runs in six overs.

WHS Old Boys lost openers Wimpie Viljoen (6) and captain Zane Green (13) in quick succession. However, the experienced Gerhard Erasmus (27 not out off 24 balls) and Craig Williams (35 off 22 balls) guided the blue team to a winning chase of the small target.

• Trustco United achieved its first win of the league, beating MR24/7 Welwitschia by a convincing eight-wicket margin.

The coastal visitors’ batting effort was woeful, as they were bowled out for 87 runs. The only resistance came from Shalako Groenewald (26) and Matthew de Gouveia (35).

United’s top run scorers were Adam Bassingthwaighte (29) and Nyashadzaishe Nyasha (44 not out), after the latter also excelled as opening bowler with 3/28 in 5 overs. Andre Siepker took 4/1 in an incisive 2.3 overs.
