Rössing Uranium has increased the annual marathon prize money by N$10 000, which will see the winners taking home N$20 000 in cash prizes.
The winning athletes will also receive a development bonus.
Rössing spokesperson Daylight Ekandjo acknowledged the athletes’ efforts and believes that the increase will come in handy for those who have been part of this marathon.
“Following our first virtual marathon in 2021, we recognised the effort that goes into running a virtual marathon and for that reason, we want to reward our runners for the hard work.
“A virtual marathon is challenging because runners are all on their own, with no water points, no road marshals and running on different road terrains,” Ekandjo said.
She added that the challenges these athletes face during or even before the race has made them realise how difficult the virtual marathon really is.
“We looked at all these challenges, and as a responsible corporate company, we saw it best fit that we increase the prize money in all categories,” Ekandjo said.
The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted sport activities, with the annual Rössing Marathon no exception.
But Rössing Uranium says it remains committed to continued hosting of the marathon in the best format that will benefit those that compete in it.
“This is our investment to the community, and for us, we want to continue promoting a healthy and active lifestyle,” Ekandjo said.
This year, the virtual marathon will take place on 12 March, and runners across the country can run from wherever they find themselves.
Ekandjo urged all Namibians to register for the popular event.
Runners can register on www.rossing.com closing date for registration is 18 February 2022.
