Play on
Jacky Mostert and Hambelileni Kamati
‘If music be the food of love…play on’. Shakespeare wrote this in 1602, but never were more wise words uttered. According to the dictionary music is to have rhythm, melody, or harmony.
Music adjusts our moods, and is used throughout our lives. To lead a healthy life, we need to incorporate music. Whether playing it, listening to it, or using it.
At ISWB, the iconic music legend, Wilna Liebenberg, makes sure this love of music is deeply rooted in all the students.
Throughout the years, she has unveiled countless students’ hidden talents and capabilities. Music is her passion, and she instils a deep rooted love for it in all her students. She does not only build their self-confidence, but also plays a leading part in their success stories. One example of her tremendous success is Claudia García, a student who studied music at ISWB. After school, in 2017, she started her studies at the University of Cape Town. She completed her Bachelor of Music degree with distinction and has now started her Honours at Stellenbosch University, specialising in Chamber Music Performance.
Ning Wei Shen is another protégé of Ms Liebenberg. She is currently doing her Honors in Music online and was a finalist for the UNISA Grade 8 bursary in 2020.
The So International team caught up with Sarafina Katojima, currently a student at ISWB who passed her IGCSE exams with a distinction, and she shared her story with us. Ever since she was young, she loved music. For her there was no option, she had to take Music as a subject. She says it had given her an understanding of what music is really about.
“I learned that singing is not just stretching out words, but it’s almost like a sport. You have to learn to control your voice, as well as the techniques on how to master it. You have to be physically fit in order to be a great singer.”
She also explains that the study of music is far more than just singing.
She gets to study the History of music, and where the music we listen to today originated from. Her studies include learning about the instruments, and how to play one - the recorder. Last, but not least she learned how to compose her own music! In fact, she composed two songs.
She says: “I don't listen to music the same way I used to. When I listen to music I look for techniques and styles and I can identify almost every instrument.”
Taking music as a subject is definitely not for the weak. It requires hard work and a lot of self-discipline because of the workload. And, of course, a teacher like Ms. Liebenberg, who dedicates her life to the music she loves so much, and who gives her students a voice. Without her encouragement and drive, the students of ISWB would not have had the platform where they can grow as formidable performers and artists.
