Established last year by the Namibia University of Science and Technology, the Tech Bazaar will be hosted over four days this year. The bazaar will be fully online and will feature interactive sessions such as Pitch sessions; Zoom Den, which is similar to Dragon’s Den; investor sessions and an open bazaar, which will showcase video clips of various inventions and later providing opportunities for parties interested in the particular invention to discuss it.

Slated for 23 to 26 September, the expected outcome of this bazaar is “to have brought together, firstly innovators among themselves so that they can join forces and offer packaged services as one to clients” while also connecting them to investors, key industry stakeholders, mentors, partners and innovation service providers.

This is with the objective to ensure that viable innovations are accelerated, incubated, marketed, financed and absorbed into the market.

“In an era where disruptive innovation creates new market opportunities and might displace established companies, ICT industry stakeholders have to change strategies and the role they play and responsibilities they carry within the national and global economic and innovation system,” say Professor Heike Winschiers and Marly Samuel, the powerful female duo coordinating and organising the Tech Bazaar.

Mobile Telecommunications (MTC), which is a partner for this year’s Tech Bazaar, and NUST aim to jointly take the Namibian ICT sector to the next level in line with the fourth industrial revolution.

Jointly hosting this Tech Bazaar “allows players in the ICT innovation space, namely the private sector, government and academia, to connect, join forces, support tech start-ups and find novel solutions to national challenges.”

To participate in the Tech Innovation Bazaar, which will be held at MTC’s innovation centre, all that is required is an innovative tech idea, concept, prototype or system ready for market. Innovators who are interested and are looking to register should visit the Ictechhub website on the following link: https://ictechhub.com/innovation-bazaar-2020-2/.

The tech innovation bazaar platform provides innovators a chance to be noticed by potential investors.

“In addition, the innovators will receive coaching and training on how to pitch and how to sell their ideas, among other mentorship.”

Along with the great networks that can be established on this platform, there will be prizes to be won including money or acceleration and mentorship programmes.

The bazaar calls on all kinds of innovative digital or ICT products that fall into sectors such as telecommunications, tech-automation, financial technology (Fin Tech), Internet of Things (IoT), health, wellness and pharma, environment: green tech and sustainability, social, supply chain and logistics, media, communication and entertainment. Typical innovations are mobile apps, web-based or Internet of Things technologies, robotics, drones or virtual reality products.

The bazaar will also include presentations and exhibitions from incubation, accelerating and innovation labs and the entire event will be 100% online.

“All participants and the public will be issued with a link that will allow them to access and participate in the Innovation Bazaar.”

The event coordinators say it is paramount to start developing solutions to challenges faced every day and the NUST faculty of computing is dedicated to advocating for digital transformation.

“It provides an opportunity for cutting-edge research and disruptive technology developments to be brought to market.”
