The SRC is represented on all governance structures of the university and they are fully aware of the channels of communication, reporting lines and their mandate as per the SRC constitution. These provisions, in support of the SRC’s mandate, always remain fully open and accessible to the SRC. The SRC admits that the approach to record the interventional action and circulate it on social media was inappropriate and in poor judgement in addressing their concerns. The SRC would like to clarify that their actions were neither a demonstration nor an instigation of a demonstration.
With regards to Covid-19 strategy and regulations,
the university has a strategy, regulations and standard operating procedures which are regularly updated and aligned for full compliance with the national public health and safety regulations. However, with the commencement of face-to-face assessments, new risks were identified. In mitigation, all face-to-face assessments will be managed centrally by the examinations office to avoid congestion and double booking of venues, and to ensure that assessments are adequately spread out and accommodated in case of Covid-19 positive cases. Furthermore, additional protocol officers will be assigned and deployed to ensure compliance with the university’s regulations.
Academic calendar
The university’s decision to roll over the 2020 academic year to 2021 due to lost time experienced in 2020 has resulted in a number of risks mainly resulting from a congested 2021 academic year. In line with ongoing efforts to mitigate the risks, the university resolved to extend the first semester from 11 to 25 June to allow more room for teaching and learning activities to be completed. All lecturers are required to comply with specific directives in this regard, which will be issued by the deputy vice-chancellor.
Student meal refunds, SRC benefits and incentives and student residences and hostels
The university exco directed that all outstanding student meal refunds are to be expeditiously handled by the office of the bursar. The directorate of students' services will further guide the SRC submission on benefits and incentives to council expeditiously.
The university closed the boys hostel following a report of high health and safety risks. Necessary corrective measures are being pursued, taking into account the current financial constraints.
