Namibian sport well on its way

With this column, I want to touch a little on everything that has been happening on the sports front. Last week, representatives of Fifa flew in to sit with some bodies to discuss and find solutions to the local football fracas. Imagine Fifa getting involved in sorting out personality clashes, or rather to mediate egos like those uncles who get called in when people are fighting over inheritance. I really didn’t realise how toxic football in Namibia could be. People will do anything to have a bite of the football apple.
What the solution is right now from Fifa’s sit in, no one knows. Will they be back, no one knows, all I know is that we are in a long ride.
On a positive note, Christine Mboma is gunning for two more accolades after she made it to the nomination lists of World Athletics Awards as well as the Athletics Weekly Magazine Awards.
For the 2021 edition of World Athletics Awards, the 18-year-old Namibian sprinter is among five nominees shortlisted for the Female Rising Star of the Year Award, which recognises this year’s best Under-20 athlete.
The category will focus on the various incredible performances witnessed at this year’s U/20 World Athletics Championships, held in Nairobi; the Tokyo Olympic Games, as well as other events around the world, such as the Diamond League and other meetings. This is an incredible achievement for the young athlete, only good and better things are expected to come from the 18-year-old.
The Desert Jewels of Namibia are doing exceptionally well in the Netball Africa Cup, playing the likes of Uganda and Zimbabwe, highly ranked countries in netball circles can never be easy for the Jewels. With more exposure to competition, the team can only grow better and better.
The Eagles of Namibia returned last week from playing in the T20 Cricket World Cup. For the first time in their history, the team won two matches.
Surely, the world has seen the capabilities of Namibia’s cricket players and young boys and girls can now aspire to playing for the national team one day. Big ups to Cricket Namibia for their exceptional work in diversifying the game and reaching towns that have never hosted or watched a game of cricket in their lives.
The women’s rugby team for the first time in years will be playing against a quality Zambian side. This is a great opportunity for the ladies to get game time. Being led by a former player herself, the team can only aspire for great things. On Friday they also bagged a kit sponsor in the like of NAMDIA, things can only get better for Christel Kotze and the whole rugby fraternity.
Perhaps one day, NAMDIA will sponsor the women’s rugby league. One can only hope.
The year is about to end, and before that, the Nedbank Desert Dash will take place. Cyclist from all over the world are expected to circle from Windhoek to the coast. These are great times in Namibian sports. Everyone is involved, the nation is rallying behind athletes and so are various sponsors, lets continue to do better!
