Namibian international and Alashkert midfielder Wangu Gome has expressed disappointment following his club’s 1-0 aggregate defeat to Scottish Premier League side Rangers FC.

The Armenian Premier League champions failed to overturn the 1-0 deficit in the tie which they first lost away before hosting the Scottish Champions at home last Thursday.

“We are shattered by the defeat because we were really very close to coming away with a victory in our second leg match.

“It is every player’s dream to play in the elite Europa League group stages against some of the best players.

“That is why it was very disappointing not to make it to the next stage of this competition,” Gome said.

The footballer was used as a substitute, replacing Artak Grigoryan in the 75th minute of the match.

Missed chances

He said most members of the club rued the missed chances that could have secured them a place in the next round.

“We have no one to blame, but we just could not capitalise on the chances we had and that it is why it proved very difficult for us to come away with a victory.

“These guys are professionals and will bounce back from the heartbreak,” Gome noted.

Alashkert came into the European football journey after winning the Armenian Premier League.

The team first qualified for the Europa League 2015–16 during qualification round one after achieving fourth place in the Armenian Premier League 2014–2015.

Gome joined the club in 2020 following his exit from South Africa’s Cape Umoya United.

Experience

Alashkert gave Gome his first taste of Europa League football after the team played in the competition’s playoffs last year.

“I am happy for the experience I picked up during this competition and one can only hope that we will come back stronger next year.

“It is always something very special to feature against a team of high-profile players and a coach that once played for Liverpool FC,” he said in reference to Gerrard.
