Fisheries Minister inaugurates N$12 million ice facility

Luderitz – The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resourses, Bernhardt Esau, on Friday inaugurated a N$12 million ice facility of the National Fishing Corporation of Namibia (Fishcor) in L?deritz in the //Kharas Region.Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Esau said it is well known that fish is an extremely perishable resource and requires proper cold chain management.According to Esau, the ice facility is the solution to challenges in the fishing industry of keeping fish fresh between the stages of extraction from the sea through to the distribution of processed products.He said with the new plant, L?deritz-based vessels will not have to travel to Walvis Bay to procure ice to facilitate the fishing process.“This facility is thus a very significant project for the company’s operation as it will improve the vessels turnaround time. This will greatly enhance the company’s capacity to meet its customer demands of high quality fish, delivered in a timely manner from right here in L?deritz,” Esau remarked. The ice plant has a production capacity of 100 metric tons of ice per day and a holding capacity of 150 metric tons. It also has the capacity to supply other fishing companies with ice, both in L?deritz and Walvis Bay upon request. Esau on Friday said fish has the ability to play a meaningful role in the fight against poverty in the country.Esau made these remarks while opening a new fish shop in the Extension Seven residential area in L?deritz. The minister said that apart from the nutritional benefit of consuming fish, local sale of fish promotes enterprise development in rural and urban areas. “When fish is available, our people are able to set up fish shops, process dried, smoked and otherwise transformed fish, and hence generate household income which greatly helps in our fight against poverty,” Esau said. The new fish shop targets about 15 000 inhabitants of L?deritz and the surrounding areas.Esau urged Namibians to consume more fish as their consumption per capita is low compared to the fish consumption of the world. “Currently our consumption per capita is 11 kilograms (kg) per person per year which is way below the world average consumption of 20.5 kg of fish per person per year,” he said. The fish shop was constructed under the Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust which aims to promote national fish consumption.The fish shop features a retail area, fish processing area, cold store, canteen and one office. - Nampa
