Don’t get hooked on a plan - Uguanga
Wetumwene Shikage
Anna Uguanga is a candidate legal practitioner at Appolos Shimakeleni law firm in Windhoek.
Uguanga says being a candidate legal practitioner is a requirement for becoming an admitted legal practitioner of the High Court. Describing her job, Uguanga says, “It entails completing coursework modules, and then practical legal training and mentorship. During this training, your job is to give legal advice to your client after doing research, drafting legal documents and defending clients in court.”
She added that partly clear skies do occur when she gets some free time off work. “When I'm not being a legal fixer or a plant mom, I'm either operating a small online store called Snatched-by-A, preparing delicious meals or browsing Pinterest for interior design ideas.”
Uguanga emerged from the northern town of Ongwediva and graduated from the University of Namibia with a Bachelor of Law Honours and a Diploma in Alternative and Dispute Resolution. After completing tertiary education, Uguanga decided to settle for a career path which can elevate her skills and grow through it.
As much as career opportunities seem to be easy flowing, they each have ups and downs which need to be overcome with time and experience. Uguanga says her biggest challenge came when she was expected to complete a compulsory course that candidates must attend in addition to practical training called JTC.
“This course ran for six months, from 17:00 to 21:00 daily. It was insane because I had to balance between work and school while trying to not crash.”
Uguanga futher states that her biggest accomplishment was drawn from her inspiration of always seeing the likes of Annelise Keating from ‘How To Get Away With Murder’ and Harvey Specter from ‘Suits’ advocate and deliver justice for their clients hence her biggest accomplishment thus far would have to be experiencing that.
Daily engagements
A typical day for the young legal practitioner starts with a cup of tea and a jotted-down day plan. When she is not in court, her day is mostly spent preparing legal documents, consulting with clients on their legal matters and trying to help them resolve any injustice they are faced with.
On a daily basis, Uguanga is driven by determination and perseverance. “Life is not simple, it knocks you down and kicks you backwards, but the ability to shift your mindset and get back up to achieve one’s goals and ambitions motivates me every day,” she says.
Uguanga advises those who wish to propel in their careers to not get so hooked on a plan when planning for the future, as it remains uncertain. Instead, she advises to always be prepared to live life with an open mind in order for you to easily reset and try again.
The young practitioner shares her future plans as a driven and ambitious professional with a fear of leaving earth without achieving the goals. Her plans include being an admitted legal practitioner and a successful entrepreneur.
