Combining interests in technical design with construction

My name is Vivien Keis. I am a civil engineering student at Liaoning Shihua University in China. From an early age, I’ve always had a desire to combine my interest in technical design with construction. I have always had a clear passion for engineering and design, as my childhood aspiration was to become an architect. Later on, my eyes were opened to the wide range of opportunities that engineering had to offer. With the desire to combine my interest of technical design and construction, civil engineering was a clear career path for me. I wanted to work on houses. I started my first year of university in China in 2018.

The Covid-19 pandemic has shown that in-person learning, on the whole, leads to better academic outcomes, greater levels of student engagement, higher rates of attendance and better social and emotional well-being, and ensures access to critical school services and extracurricular activities when compared to remote learning. The pandemic broke out when I was a third-year student, and that’s when we get to do practicals. But with Covid-19 around, that unfortunately couldn’t happen. And I honestly hated that aspect of Covid-19 because I was looking forward to doing practicals and, other than that, it really felt like I wasn’t really learning anything because as much as virtual learning was an option, one can’t do practicals online or virtually.

One of the challenges I face in general and also due to Covid-19 is that I’m afraid I don’t really understand what I’m studying, because my course requires me to do things practically and I personally also learn better and faster if I am doing practical work and if I am with a lecturer and I can directly ask questions in a case where I might be stuck.

If you are a grade 12 or a first-year student and want to go study abroad, my advice would be that you should complete your first year in Namibia before going abroad.
