Albertina Ndengu was born in Windhoek and grew up in Walvis Bay.
“Our house always had more than five people (my mom, sister, three cousins and an aunt or uncle or tenant), but I always preferred to sit alone and just enjoy my solitude,” says Ndengu.
One would describe Ndengu as the quiet one in the family. Growing up Ndengu loved sports, but she found it boring to watch other people play, so she decided to play basketball for their school team. Ndengu went to Duinesig Combined School (now Duinesig High School), where she fell in love with accounting. After completing high school Ndengu went to Unam where she studied towards a bachelor’s degree in chartered accountancy. She went on to study for a postgraduate diploma at Northwest University.
“Initially, when i decided to study chartered accountancy, I did not really know what I was getting into. I was still so young and was just excited to go to university. As time went by, I developed a passion for solving problems and finding solutions. What motivated me to stay in the field is the exposure it comes with and how broad it is, it does not confine me to only a specific industry. I also love how challenging it gets,” says Ndengu.
When asked about her journey with PwC, Ndengu said: “I learned about PwC when I was in grade 10 through the cash prizes that they awarded to top-performing learners in mathematics and accounting, and I was a recipient of the award for three consecutive years. I was then granted a CA bursary when I was in my second year at Unam and this also opened up the opportunity for me to do Vacation work at PwC.
“Being new at the firm and trying to keep up with the quality of work that PwC provides to its clients adds a lot of pressure and responsibility on me, but I have amazing seniors who are always a call away.”
Ndengu’s day-to-day workload is manageable, and is less stressful because she knows that there is always someone who is willing to help her when she’s stuck.
Careers asked Ndengu what advice she would give to other young people, and she replied: “With all the uncertainties in the world today, it is important to have an anchor... something to live by and that will keep you focused no matter what circumstances you find yourself in. So that when the days get tough and you feel you cannot take it anymore, you can look back at it and it will remind you why you started, why you need to finish, and why you cannot give up. For me, it is Jeremiah 29:11-14.”
