Edwina Mensah-Husselmann is a dedicated clinical psychologist whose goal is to positively influence people's lives.Mensah-Husselmann studied psychology at the University of Namibia, driven by her fascination with how the mind functions. While juggling her studies, she also lectured and offered counselling to students, which deepened her appreciation of psychological concepts.Her professional skills were further improved during a crucial internship with Dr H. Raath at Okonguarri Psychotherapeutic Centre. After earning her master’s degree, Mensah-Husselmann took on the significant responsibility of leading the psychology sub-division within the Namibian Correctional Services. Eventually, she transitioned into private practice and founded her own practice, Geluk Psychology Services – fulfilling her aspiration to directly support individuals’ mental health.Growing up, Mensah-Husselmann observed how individuals around her responded differently to life's challenges. ”I became deeply interested in understanding the underlying reasons behind these reactions,” she said.As she progressed through her education, she was drawn to the idea of delving into the complexities of the human mind and helping individuals navigate psychological struggles.She enriched her theoretical learning with practical experience as a teacher and counsellor, and further honed her skills during a 2 000-hour internship at a psychotherapeutic centre.She specialised in clinical psychology, delving into psychopathology and psychotherapy. She often attends conferences, seminars, and peer consultations as part of her dedication to professional development in order to stay relevant with new developments and uphold high standards of practice.“Successful clinical psychologists possess qualities such as a passion for psychology, emotional strength, ethical awareness and an analytical approach,” Mensah-Husselmann said. Rewarding workAs a clinical psychologist, her days are anything but typical.The bulk of her week is dedicated to client sessions, where she meets with individuals or couples, providing a safe and supportive space to explore their concerns and work towards positive change. Some weeks, she dedicates time to delivering presentations or workshops on mental health topics.Handling administrative tasks and maintaining emotional boundaries are significant challenges in her role. She allocates dedicated time slots for paperwork and documentation, ensuring efficiency and preventing these duties from overwhelming her client-focused work.Maintaining emotional boundaries is crucial, and she makes a conscious effort to disconnect mentally from work once she leaves the office, emphasising the importance of self-care to her team and colleagues.“It's incredibly rewarding to witness the journey of personal transformation that clients undergo during therapy. Whether it's overcoming trauma, managing anxiety, improving relationships or enhancing self-esteem, witnessing my clients' progress and growth reaffirms the power of psychological intervention,” she said.
