Bank Windhoek’s Financial Reporting Manager, Heidi Nel, started her journey at Bank Windhoek on 1 July 2019 as a Financial Reporting Specialist. At first, she felt overwhelmed by the complexity of the banking industry, and she wondered what she had gotten herself into by joining the fast-paced financial profession.

However, after Nel found her feet and learned more about the banking industry, she shared that things started to get more interesting by the day. “I was happy that I made the transition from audit to banking and I am eager to see what else I will learn in the finance department and within the Bank,” she said.

Nel has been in the finance department since 2019. She now holds the title of the Bank Financial Reporting Manager, a position she has held since 1 August 2022. Regarding her educational background, Nel studied B. Com Chartered Accountancy at the North-West University of Potchefstroom in South Africa. She started her studies in 2012 and finished with her honours in 2015. Thereafter, Nel completed her auditing articles at SGA Namibia from 2016 to 2018.

Careers asked Nel what her current position entails she said her role involves statutory or regulatory reporting. “I prepare and review Bank Windhoek’s monthly management accounts. I am also involved in reviewing the statutory returns submitted to the Bank of Namibia, as the regulator. I assist with the interim and year-end audit and the preparation of the financial statements of Bank Windhoek and its subsidiaries namely BW Finance, Bank Windhoek Property and Bank Windhoek Nominees. I also need to investigate any new changes in accounting standards and regulatory standards to ensure that we are compliant,” said Nel.

Careers asked Nel what some of her hobbies are outside work and the things that inspire her. Nel said she enjoys cooking, writing, woodwork, interior design, travelling the world, reading a good book and learning about new cultures.

Nel concluded by advising aspiring youth to always do their best. “Not everything will make sense now, but eventually, you will understand how it all fits together – do not lose hope. Hard work always pays off. Stick to your roots and principles. Keep your head up and always do your best,” she said.
