Striving towards new challenges
To grow in the teaching profession
Tangeni Abed has been the principal of Suiderlig Secondary School for three years and three months, but was recently appointed as a teacher at Namcol.
After years of being a principal, Tangeni Abed has decided to go back to teaching, having recently been appointed as a teacher at the Namibia College of Open Learning (Namcol). Asked why he made the change, he said it was an opportunity for a new challenge to move from formal education to non-formal education.
The grass is only greener where you water it and with his new appointment, one of the challenges he has faced is learners’ lack of discipline and motivation.
How he overcomes this challenge is by implementing a system which has corrective measures and rewards for good behaviour.
The school also implemented a motivational programme where they bring in motivational speakers to conduct sessions with learners who are committed to their work and to improve their results.
“My highlight of my career is the appreciation and support the teachers, learners and parents have shown me throughout my time as the principal of Suiderlig Secondary School.
“It is one of the most motivating factors to know that you have the support of the community you serve daily.”
Abed prepared himself for his new role by familiarising himself with the values of the Namcol institution.
“I had an idea of what to expect in informal education as I have been tutoring at Namcol for the past four years. I have also been involved in tutoring at the Namibia University of Science and Technology and the University of Namibia for a number of years. This experience prepared me well for this new role.”
Abed hopes to better results and attendance rate from learners at Namcol, and later on he hopes to establish a full centre in the //Karas and Hardap regions.
“I am looking forward to continuing my passion for education and making a difference within the youth of Keetmanshoop and also preaching the message ‘adding value to oneself continuously’,” he said.
