Born and raised in Windhoek, Johannes Tieties has had a good start to the year. One of the biggest highlights was wining the pro-chef Nedbank Kapana Cook-Off Competition on 11 June.

Tieties, who started his working life as a packer at Woermann, Brock supermarket, at first did not imagine himself becoming a chef.

“After working as a packer, I was then moved to the kitchen and that’s where it all started,” he said. Through hard work, Tieties got a new job at Panarottis, and not long after that, he was appointed as a waiter at Col'Cacchio.

For Tieties this was the first time working in a restaurant environment.

“I got to know how to work on the floor as a waiter and also worked in the kitchen from time to time.”

Tieties made his way to Silverspoon Academy to find out if he could get enrolled to pursue a career as a chef.

He wanted to apply for a diploma course, but a lack of funds made it difficult.

“My dad was a security guard and my mom was a domestic worker, so financially it was it was a challenge.”

Helping hand

Eventually however, the academy offered to find a sponsor, because of the great potential Tieties showed as a chef. As a result, he was able to complete the two-year diploma.

Tieties was ambitious and it showed in what he was doing – he won his first gold medal at the Namibia Junior Chef of the Year Competition in 2017.

“While I was still in chef’s school, I took part in three competitions in 2017, 2018 and 2019, which I won consecutively.” This year he ws crowned ass the professional chef of the Nedbank Cook-Off, walking away with a N$10 000 prize.

Tieties said, “I will use the capital for my business idea - a bakery business that I plan on growing and making it bigger.”

He plans to travel to South Africa to gain more experience and learn as much as he can, as he feels he has not reached his full potential just yet.
