Once uncertain, now unstoppable

Innocensia Aribes joined Sanlam in March 2016 as a client service adviser after several unsuccessful attempts to work for the company. “I applied for both permanent and temporary positions in earlier years, which I unfortunately didn’t get. But I remained determined and hopeful and applied again and again.” Her persistence paid off. Nine years later, she serves as a learning and development officer, a position she’s held since 1 December 2022. Drawn to Sanlam’s strong brand identity, Aribes says her admiration for the company has only deepened with time.Before joining Sanlam, Aribes volunteered at a kindergarten and completed a short internship in 2014. Her first steps into the corporate world were filled with nerves but also resolve. “I remember walking into the building for the first time, unsure of what to expect but determined to give my best,” she said. Over the years, she has learned the importance of consistency, accountability and adaptability and watched her interpersonal communication skills flourish. “There’s no one-size-fits-all formula,” she said. “But a strong work ethic, patience, empathy and the ability to adapt are essential. Being considerate of others, both internally and externally, also goes a long way.”Her current role as learning and development officer at Sanlam has brought new challenges, chief among them, designing training initiatives that suit a wide range of learning preferences. “I overcame this by staying flexible and continuously seeking feedback,” she explained. “I also invested in creating content that is both relevant and accessible and collaborated closely with teams to ensure alignment with business goals.” Aribes sees herself growing further into a strategic leadership role within learning and development, with a passion for mentoring and contributing to workplace culture and engagement.Positive outlookAway from her desk, Aribes prioritises balance. “Pilates and Saturday morning runs are my go-to routines,” she said. She makes time for family and friends and recently committed to reading one book a month, a goal she’s proudly keeping up with. Journaling helps her reflect and manage her thoughts. “I make a conscious effort to balance screen time with meaningful activities that nourish my mind and spirit,” she added. “Writing things down helps me not to get caught in the web of overthinking.”Be kind To new employees joining Sanlam, her advice is clear: “Stay curious and take initiative. Build good relationships, stay open to feedback, and never underestimate the power of showing up with a positive attitude. It’s okay to ask for help, you don’t have to have all the answers from day one.” Over the years, Aribes has built collaborative, respectful relationships across departments and believes in the power of diverse perspectives. “A cohesive team creates a work environment where people feel supported and motivated,” she said. Reflecting on her progress, she added: “Being open to learning every role, task or challenge brings an opportunity to grow.” The quote that continues to guide her? “Be kind, always. Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.”
