Sakaria Mwiiyale is an economics graduate with experience in the areas of prudential supervision and regulation. For over 10 years, he served in various roles at the central bank, in the areas of exchange control, banking supervision, financial stability and payment systems.

About two years ago, he moved to the Namibia Financial Institutions Supervisory Authority (Namfisa), where he is now involved in the supervision and regulation of pension funds.

Mwiiyale serves as a manager in the pension funds and friendly societies division.

He manages a dynamic team of analysts who are tasked with registering new pension fund rules and amendments to existing pension fund rules.

"I also oversee the ongoing prudential supervision of the pension fund industry, which is carried out through offsite and onsite inspections."

In addition, he is also responsible for other management-related responsibilities such as strategic planning, workload management and quality control.

Mwiiyale says his biggest challenge would be the rapidly evolving supervisory and regulatory space, both in terms of international developments in supervisory practices and the rapid evolution in the business practices of regulated institutions. This requires agility, continuous personal development and broad reading.

Regarding his biggest accomplishment, it is a bit hard to point out anything in particular, as he has always been part of a bigger team, so there is no accomplishment he can boast about outside of the collective.

His typical day usually consists of reviewing assessment reports for applications submitted by pension funds, coupled with meetings with internal and external stakeholders at various levels. It can be described as very busy.

Goals

Professionally, he plans to become a well-rounded expert in the field of financial stability with international presence and influence.

"Along with this, I also want to establish a flourishing, relevant and impactful international university."

Furthermore, he plans to write simplified and attractive books on mathematical and other quantitative sciences and bible-based inspirational and motivational books.

"I must also compose and release at least one gospel album, in addition to being a motivational speaker."

Inspiration

Mwiiyale says his main source of inspiration is the Word of God, which he regards as absolute truth and his final authority. “Every time I come into God’s presence, I always leave a better person, determined to conquer the world. The Lord Jesus Christ is everything I will ever need.”

He is also inspired by the faith and strength of people who, starting from humble or even challenging beginnings, dare to dream big and achieve big things. “Of course, let me not forget the energy I draw from children, with all their reckless faith and simplicity of heart.”
