How smart tech is helping keep Namibia safe and welcoming

Namibia is widely recognised as one of Africa’s most vibrant, breathtaking, and peaceful destinations. From the red dunes of Sossusvlei to the salt pans of Etosha and the coastal charm of Swakopmund, the country attracts travellers from around the world. Tourism is more than an industry – it is a vital economic driver that sustains communities, creates employment, and showcases Namibia’s heritage on the global stage.

Namibia’s appeal depends strongly on its reputation as a peaceful and welcoming African destination, so maintaining visitor confidence is essential.

According to the World Population Review, Namibia ranks as the sixth-safest country in Africa. Its open spaces and renowned hospitality set a high standard, but protecting residents and visitors across vast landscapes also presents unique logistical challenges. To meet these demands, security must move beyond passive, outdated measures and adopt modern tools that operate effectively in the background.

A recent incident in Otjiwarongo demonstrates how technology can support public safety. An American couple visiting the town was robbed of cash, passports, and personal belongings. Through swift coordination, the Namibian Police used local CCTV footage to identify the suspects’ getaway vehicle. Senior Inspector Maureen Mbeha explained that officers tracked the vehicle’s route out of town, alerted neighbouring stations, and established a mobile roadblock near Kalkfeld. Within hours, the suspects were apprehended, and all stolen items were recovered.

This swift outcome illustrates the value of combining proactive technology with effective law enforcement. Modern camera systems do far more than record incidents after they occur. They provide actionable, real-time intelligence that enables authorities to respond decisively and helps protect both visitors and residents before situations escalate. When travellers see that security infrastructure can deter crime and support rapid resolution, confidence in Namibia as a destination is strengthened.

To help extend this protection across the country, Green Enterprise Solutions (Green) has partnered with Dahua Technologies, a global leader in smart security. As a certified Systems Integrator Partner, our aim is to replace time-consuming manual footage reviews with advanced observation solutions that support faster, smarter, and more coordinated security responses nationwide.

Unlike conventional video cameras, Dahua’s AI-enabled technologies are designed to address specific local safety and operational needs:

  • Smart Traffic and Mobility Tracking: Monitors vehicle movement across high-volume transit corridors and inter-town routes, enabling faster coordination across police jurisdictions.
  • Perimeter Protection and Thermal Sensing: Helps secure remote lodges, hotels, and tourist sites against unauthorised access while minimising disruption to guest privacy and the natural environment.
  • Automated Event Detection: Alerts security operators to unusual activity or potential risks in real time, allowing teams to intervene earlier and more effectively.
  • Advanced Video Search: Uses search samples, such as a vehicle, person, or animal, to scan recorded footage efficiently and help identify where a target appeared over time.

By integrating these intelligent systems into local infrastructure, police and businesses gain proactive support to help maintain safety and order. When deployed responsibly, technology is not merely a surveillance tool; it is a strategic partner that builds public confidence, protects the tourism economy, and helps ensure that residents and visitors can experience Namibia’s natural beauty with peace of mind.
