Embracing technology at work

Appointed on 1 September, Nedbank Namibia's internal audit trainee in digital and technology, Selma Shiponeni, is settling in well in her new roleShe attended primary school at Oshuulagulwa Primary School and then moved to Niita YiItula Junior Secondary School for grades eight to 10. She matriculated from Ashipala Secondary School in 2014 and moved to Windhoek the following year to pursue her tertiary education. She graduated from the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) with a bachelor's degree in informatics in 2018 and an honours degree in business informatics in 2019. “I always had strong leadership qualities, thus I was always the students' spokesperson during my studies. I served as a member of the student disciplinary committee and as a NUST student representative for internal issues,” she said. Additionally, she took part in a student exchange programme that led her to Germany's Flensburg University of Applied Sciences.At work Fundamental roles and responsibilities she has as internal audit trainee include digital and technology transformation of financial services. She provides technical support for financial, operational and performance audits. Shiponeni is responsible for establishing and maintaining professional working relations with all the internal and external stakeholders and performing internal quality assurance reviews on audits files to access compliance with internal audit standard and methodology principles.Career achievements Before joining Nedbank, she worked as a hardware and software technician at Intouch Interactive Marketing for two years and then moved to Deloitte Namibia, where she worked as an IT audit consultant. “It was at Deloitte where I realised my love for IT auditing as I was given opportunities to audit different companies in Namibia, which gave me a broad understanding of how business operations in different sectors,” she said.She added that working for Nedbank gives her the chance to improve professionally. Along with experience, this position offers her the opportunity to study towards attaining the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) qualification from the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) and or the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) qualification from the Global Institute of Internal Auditors (The IIA).Focused Beyond the fact that she had to become tech-savvy by default, the challenges that come from having to learn and understand a business process in a short period of time are always exciting for her. “I still get to dress up as a corporate young professional as I enjoy fashion and designs,” she said. She advised youth to find their passions and pursue a career that aligns with it. When she gets time off, Shiponeni likes to watch reality shows and listen to podcasts. She also recently signed up for swimming lessons.
