Edutec reimagines learning through technology

Educational technology company Edutec is developing digital solutions designed to enhance teaching, improve learner engagement and build practical skills across schools, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions, universities and various industries.

The company was established after its founders identified a gap in the way learners engage with complex concepts.

“Students in Namibia are still learning through passive methods that do not truly engage them,” says Edutec chief executive Barthromeus Shileka. “We saw a clear gap in the lack of interactive, hands-on digital learning tools designed for the African context.”

Since its establishment in 2024, Edutec has grown from developing academic simulations for schools to creating digital learning solutions for sectors such as mining and healthcare.

The company has also incorporated artificial intelligence (AI) into its simulations, making them more interactive, intelligent and learner-centred. Its simulations currently cover areas such as school science, healthcare, green hydrogen, and nuclear power plants. Through simplified, visual and interactive representations, the technology aims to help learners and professionals understand subjects that can otherwise be difficult to grasp.

Encouraging response

Edutec says the response from educators has been encouraging, with teachers reporting that learners who previously struggled with abstract concepts are engaging more confidently with the material through the simulations.

The company's work in the mining sector has similarly helped workers develop a clearer understanding of mining processes and operations.

However, Edutec acknowledges that the expansion of digital education in Namibia comes with challenges. Limited connectivity remains a barrier, prompting the company to optimise its simulations for low-bandwidth environments.

As part of its efforts to promote digital learning, Edutec will host a free National Teacher Awareness Webinar on 10 September, introducing educators to digital simulations and exploring their potential in the classroom. The organisation hopes the webinar will demonstrate how technology can complement traditional teaching methods while making complex concepts more accessible and engaging.

Looking ahead, Edutec aims to become Africa's leading provider of interactive, simulation-based learning. Its plans include developing more AI-powered simulations and an interactive AI-powered blackboard capable of transforming hand-drawn sketches into live simulations.

“The future of education is interactive and intelligent, and Edutec intends to lead it,” Shileka says.
