Youth budget to uplift youth
Youth credit scheme resumes
Several projects related to the improvement of sports infrastructure and the upliftment of Namibian youth have been budgeted for.
The ministry of youth, sports and national services has allocated a budget of N$64.5 million for a number of planned infrastructure upgrades and youth upliftment projects.
According to the ministry’s executive director, Mbumba Erastus Haitengela, and public relations officer, Aina Shikesho, the projects include work at Independence Stadium, for which N$37.5 million was budgeted.
The development of sports and the youth development indexes were allocated a budget of N$7 million.
The commencement of the construction of the Nkurenkuru multi-purpose youth centre and sport complex, was allocated a budget of N$10 million.
Funding to be determined
A number of projects still need to be revised and reviewed before being allocated funding.
The Berg Aukas electrification project has not yet been allocated funding, with service provider Cenored still to provide the ministry with a cost estimate.
Haitengela said the electrification project is an upgrade to the current electricity supply system, clarifying that the centre is not without electricity.
Another project, the Eenhana Stadium, is also being reviewed, with a budget still to be determined by the ministry.
In terms of legislation, the ministry said tenders have been issued inviting prospective legal advisors to consult on the drafting of a new sports policy and Sports Act.
Namibia youth credit scheme
For the Namibian youth credit scheme, a total budget of N$2 million has been allocated to support young entrepreneurs.
In addition, N$8 million, sponsored by the Development Bank of Namibia, will be spent to fund 121 youth enterprises.
The youth credit scheme is expected to resume in June with the training of 300 youth at the National Youth Service Training Centre. A budget of N$2 million has been set aside for this project.
Twenty young participants from 14 regions and 20 graduates from the National Youth Service The scheme has been out of operation since 2017 but has been awarding beneficiaries loans since 2020.
Current youth credit scheme phases:
Phase 1: N$1 - N$8 000
Phase 2: N$8 000 – N$14 000
Phase 3: N$ 14 000 - N$20 000
Bigger loans: N$20 000 - N$100 000

Phase 2: N$5 000 – N$8 000
Phase 3: N$8 000 – N$10 000
Bigger loan: N$10 000 – N$50 000
