Van Rhyn inaugurates new science lab
Van Rhyn Primary School in Windhoek inaugurated its newly upgraded science laboratory last week, marking a milestone in the school’s commitment to enhancing science education and providing learners with access to modern, practical learning facilities.
According to the school’s principal, Royno Gentz, the classroom had previously served as a standard learning space. With funds raised by the school, it has now been fully transformed to meet the standards of a modern science laboratory. The upgrade aims to create a more conducive environment for learners to engage in hands-on scientific experiments.
The laboratory features modern chairs and seating to support practical work, along with scientific equipment such as beakers and test tubes. Improved storage facilities for chemicals and materials ensure safety and organisation, while upgraded electrical and water systems now support a wider range of experiments. The space is bright and well-ventilated, creating a positive learning environment. Visual aids, including science charts, a full wall of the periodic table and educational posters, have been added to enhance interactive learning.
“The facility will allow our learners to experience science beyond textbooks and truly understand its applications,” Gentz said, emphasising that the improvement supports the Ministry of Education’s goal of strengthening STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) learning in Namibian schools.
In her keynote address, Khomas Regional Directorate representative Julia Muyunda emphasised that the Ministry of Education reaffirms its commitment to initiatives that strengthen education quality and promote practical learning environments.
“This science laboratory marks a significant milestone, not only for Van Rhyn Primary School but for the entire education fraternity in the Khomas Region,” she said. “It will serve as a platform where learners can translate theoretical knowledge into practical understanding - an essential step towards nurturing curiosity, creativity, and a spirit of discovery.”
Grade seven science teacher Likando Iileka also thanked the Khomas Directorate for its continued support of the school and its initiatives. The newly upgraded laboratory is expected to inspire learners to explore science actively and cultivate a lifelong interest in STEM subjects.
