Uniting through netball
A well-oiled sport weekend
Netball teams took to the courts on Friday and Saturday, 4 and 5 June, at the Elnatan sport weekend in Stampriet.
The last game on Saturday at Private School Elnatan’s sport weekend at Stampriet saw the seniors of Elnatan and Tsumeb Gymnasium compete against the under-19s of the two schools. The friendlies between the two schools ensured for entertainment and a good time, which ended off the two days of sport.
According to Anna Kriel, the coach of Tsumeb Gymnasium's first team, explained that the seniors were well prepared as they regularly practice against the first team girls. “There are no teams to practice against,” Kriel said, adding that playing against the first teams gives them extra training.
Before the games against the seniors, the under-19 girls competed against one another. The under-19 game between Tsumeb Gymnasium and Elnatan saw the Elnatan girls winning by 18-4.
Kriel said the first five minutes of the game went well, with the Tsumeb team scoring four goals after each other, but after that, they could not get back again as Elnatan kept scoring.
“Both teams are quite young,” Nicole Francis, the coach of the Elnatan girls team, said, adding that her players struggled a bit in the first half of the game but after the second half, things picked up and the girls kept scoring.
“I am certain they were quite fit,” Francis said. The under-19 girls have been working on their fitness, she said, which is the reason they did so well.
Adelheid Slinger, the captain of the Tsumeb Gymnasium under-19 netball team, expressed her pride towards her team, although they lost. “It was an awesome game and I am really proud to have represented my school here,” she said.
The weekend for the netball started off on Friday afternoon with the under-15 hosts facing Keetmanshoop Private School (KPS), which saw the host school losing 20-10. On Saturday, the games started as early as 08:00 with the under-13 of Windhoek Afrikaans Private School (WAP) going up against KPS. WAP won the match 20-5.
Throughout the weekend, friendly games were played between five schools - WAP, the hosts Elnatan, Tsumeb Gymnasium, KPS and Pro-Ed Academy.
