Unam LAMA's official opening celebrates 'legal renaissance'

The Law Association of Mooting and Advocacy (LAMA) at the University of Namibia (Unam) recently held its official opening event under the theme 'Legal Renaissance'.

The event marked a significant milestone for the society and showcased its commitment to promoting legal education and practical skill development among law students.

The ceremony commenced with a warm welcome from law lecturer Adolf Gariseb, followed by the introduction of the LAMA executives by Karel Gaeb, a senior associate at Sisa Namandje & Co, Inc. The executive committee, led by chairperson Amanda Mufeti and vice-chairperson Anna Kawa, included secretary-general Wendy Ipangelwa, treasurer Chantell Tjivangurura and faculty consultant Gaeb, and outlined their year plan aimed at enriching the academic experience of law students.

Distinguished speakers, including Judge Orben Sibeya and Advocate Mbushandje Ntinda, shared insightful talks on the importance of mooting and advocacy, the evolving nature of the legal profession, and the significance of staying on top of technological advancements.

"In mooting, don't save your best argument for the end. Instead, get them hooked early on," they said.

Their remarks underscored the transformative impact of legal education and highlighted the relevance of practical skill development in preparing law graduates for the dynamic legal landscape.



Exceptional turnout

The event attracted an exceptional turnout featuring prominent figures from the legal fraternity, including justice ministry executive director Gladys Pickering, and managing partner at Dentons Brockerhoff, Trevor Brockerhoff. The enthusiastic response from attendees, coupled with expressions of support and willingness to collaborate, reflected the positive energy and optimism surrounding LAMA's initiatives.

Challenges in securing speakers were overcome with resilience by the team, resulting in a successful event that showcased the association's dedication to empowering law students and bridging the gap between theory and practice.

Looking ahead, LAMA plans to organizse training sessions, internal moot courts and community outreach activities, reinforcing its commitment to holistic legal education and community engagement.
