The journey of Otji FM radio’s Britney Louw
Voice, visibility and vision
As a station manager, presenter and brand ambassador, Britney thrives on building connections.
In an era where radio and brand promotion play a powerful role in shaping culture and influencing thought, 25-year-old Britney Louw of Otji FM stands out as a rising force in both industries.
As a station manager, presenter, and brand ambassador, she has built a meaningful connection with her audience, leading Otji FM – a commercial station in Otjiwarongo with over 13,500 listeners – while also promoting local brands such as Eya Water, Oshikoto Transport, and Eya Car Rentals. For Louw, radio is more than just speaking to people; it's about engaging with them and creating a shared space where stories, inspiration, and community thrive.
Her success story, like most, wasn’t always linear. Her first attempt was crushed at the age of 15 when she auditioned for a TV presenting role that never aired. When she finally entered the radio industry at the age of 21, she had no formal education and no relevant experience, but she persevered. As a radio station manager – especially at such an early stage in her life – she also faced significant public scrutiny, with some suggesting her success had been fast-tracked because of her looks. “People don’t know that I had to work my way up. Early mornings, before my on-air shift, I would clean the studio – sweeping, mopping, emptying bins – all with the same pride I now bring to managing a team.”
Triumph
Despite ongoing scrutiny, Louw persevered, determined to rise above the negativity. From cleaning the station and studio in the early mornings before her shifts to now managing the radio station, she proved that hard work overcomes opinion. Today, she enjoys connecting with people each morning, boosting audience confidence through motivational talks, and helping small brands grow.
“I find joy in watching small brands bloom into recognised names.”
Louw has also received acclaim as the youngest person to manage an entire radio station.
Encouragement
Reflecting on her life experiences, Louw emphasised that there will always be people who speak negatively about you, but it is up to you to decide how you respond.
She chose to use it as motivation to prove people wrong. She expressed that no matter where you are from, you can and will make it in life. “I want to be a living reminder that humble beginnings can birth unstoppable women.”
