SPORTS STAR OF THE WEEK: George Gaweseb
George Gaweseb is a 22-year-old right winger who plays football for the Namibian University of Science and Technology (NUST) in the Khomas Second Division Football League.
Gaweseb reflects on his early passion for the sport: "I got into football naturally; it runs in the family. My mum played netball and my dad played football, so it was in my blood."
He credits his cousin as his biggest inspiration. "He was so talented, and seeing him on the field made me want to follow in his footsteps."
Reflecting on his career so far, Gaweseb shares one of his proudest achievements: "Getting the opportunity to leave Namibia and play for one of the top academies, Balderstone Sports Institute (BSI) in South Africa, for two years."
His hard work led to further accomplishments, including trials with La Masia, a South African Football Association (SAFA) Second Division team in Johannesburg. "I had an amazing season, met incredible coaches and teammates, and these are achievements I will always be proud of," he adds.
Balancing academic life with athletic commitments is no easy feat. "It’s not easy, but I manage my time carefully," Gaweseb admits. "I’m at school from 07:30 to around 16:30, depending on my timetable. After that, I go straight to training for about two hours. Once I’m home, I shower, do schoolwork, and help out around the house. Other tasks are completed over the weekend."
Gaweseb names Peter Shalulile as his role model in the football world. "He’s a hardworking footballer from Namibia who made it to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in South Africa. The fact that he came from Namibia and reached that level is a reminder to me that no matter your situation or where you come from, you can make it too. His story pushes me to keep going, stay focused and believe in myself, even when things get tough."
Looking ahead, Gaweseb shares his future goals: "I want to represent Namibia at national level and play professionally in the PSL. I’ve been working hard, staying focused, and giving my all to reach those dreams."
He continues: "I believe that with dedication, faith and consistency, anything is possible – and I’m not stopping until I get there."
George Gaweseb is one of many determined young footballers making an impact in the local football scene. His talent, resilience, and ambition make him a rising star to watch.
